Artist Residency

A Place That Inspires, Free From Distraction.

Crestone Mountain Zen Center in its high mountain setting in southern Colorado
You don't need to be somebody you're not. You just need to be yourself, wholeheartedly — bringing your full being into the situation, without holding anything back.

Quiet studio space for creative work at Crestone Mountain Zen Center

As the word suggests, inspiration is always as close as our in-breath – and then the out-breath. Yet how many of us have trouble manifesting our deepest creative aspirations, bombarded with the countless demands and distractions of our hyperactive modern world?

Forget the soul-numbing corporate coworking setups. At CMZC, you’ll find true nourishment for the creative spirit, surrounded by views of the Sangre De Cristo peaks and the vast San Luis Valley, held by deep silence and the steady, focused environment of a Zen monastery.

Everything you need is here: three delicious meals a day you never have to think about, Wi-Fi if you need it, a desk with a view.

The time is right. The place is ideal. The work is waiting.

This is for you, if …

You need uninterrupted time to create.

You find your best ideas emerge in natural surroundings.

You seek focus without unwanted distractions.

You want a supportive container without creative constraints.

Being part of the Dharma Sangha Community at CMZC for my two-week Artist Residency was a deeply profound, transformative experience. Surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, inspiration for painting came not only from the beauty of this natural setting, but also from the daily meditation practice in the Zendo, where meditating in community brought me to a new depth of understanding. From painting outside by the Spanish Creek, to painting in the Dome, a deep level of spirituality and connection came through in my intuitive art practice. I am so grateful to all the residents and monks at CMZC for welcoming and mentoring me throughout this beautiful time.

I felt incredibly fortunate for the privilege to practice here. The food and accommodations are fantastic. The grounds and practice spaces are cared for with an awareness of their preciousness. My practice is renewed and inspired after my stay.

Full disclosure: I lived at CMZC for quite a while. Still, I think I can say with some objectivity that it's an absolute gem of a center. Sited in one of the most beautiful places imaginable, the food is amazing, the people are down to earth and intelligent. It's a great place to hold a workshop, or, if you're interested in Zen - to sit a retreat.

Common questions

The things you're wondering

What is the food like?

Vegetarian, mostly organic and regional, partly grown on the land in summer. Dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice.

Can I arrive by car? Public transport?

The nearest airport is Alamosa (ALS), one hour away. The nearest bus stop is in Moffat, 30 minutes away. We can arrange pickup for a fee. Parking is free and safe at our property.

Do I have to be silent the whole time?

The center operates mostly in functional speech – we speak when needed for work or questions. In general we start our meals in silence, and then move on to a conversation part. Throughout the day, there are also opportunities when you're welcome to chat and talk with others if you'd like.

What kind of clothing is appropriate for the zendo or for meditation?

In the meditation hall (zendo), we wear dark clothing that covers at least the shoulders and knees. In general, we recommend loose-fitting clothing that is not too tight or even constricting.
