Contemplative / Silent

The Power of Deep Silence

Quiet grounds of Crestone Mountain Zen Center in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains
The world needs contemplative practice. It needs the teachings of wisdom and compassion — not as philosophy, not as technique, but as a living reality, woven into the texture of ordinary life.
Tatsudo Nicole Baden Roshi
Quiet interior space used for meditation at Crestone Mountain Zen Center

Let the chatter go. Allow the ceaseless inner narrative, the tiresome stream of remembrances, plans, and imagined conversations, to fall quiet, like a leaf spinning gently to the forest floor.

Here’s the serenity you’ve been longing for, wrought by the mountains and the valley, by the wind in the pine boughs and the sudden flash of a blue jay.

Converse at select times if you choose or enjoy Noble Silence for the duration of your stay. Meditate in the zendo with the community or in solitude. Settle deeper and deeper until the clouds disappear and your natural clarity and joy shine forth.

This is for you, if …

You long for quiet time to reflect and deepen your practice.

You enjoy exploring Buddhist teachings through meditation and study.

You seek respite from constant conversation, noise, and stimulation.

You trust that stillness can reveal what words often cannot.

The retreat is also the place

What a day here could look like

Every day follows a gentle rhythm.

The structure is simple, yet spacious. Meditation, meals, work, rest, and time in nature each have their place. You are invited to participate as fully or as lightly as your retreat calls for, allowing the rhythm of the monastery to support your own.

Zazen + Service / Chanting

Two zazen sessions (= silent meditation) of 30–40 minutes each, with 10 minutes of Kinhin (=walking meditation) in between, followed by 25 minutes of Service (a sequence of bows and chants as a mutual practice in a shared space)

Oryoki Breakfast (ritualized meal in silence)

Oryoki means “Just Enough” and is a traditional monastic and ritualized meal using three bowls and just the utensils needed, following a specific procedure (we’d be happy to give you an introduction, if you’re interested in participating)

Work Practice

In Zen Buddhism, daily work and practice are closely intertwined. We limit conversations to functional talk—the kind necessary to carry out work in the garden, the kitchen, and the temple—in order to transfer our practice from zazen into everyday life.

Table Lunch

Lunch together isn't just about eating; it's also a wonderful opportunity to get to know one another and have a conversation.

Study time / Rest / Hiking

After lunch, you can continue your personal studies using the digital teaching materials provided by our Abbot and Head Teacher, Tatsudo Roshi, or one of the many Buddhist books available in our library. It’s also a good time for hiking and long walks—you’re welcome to let your body and mind guide you.

Table Dinner

We'll all get together again for dinner—this is another great opportunity to get to know others through conversation.

Zazen

In the evening, we sit for one or two 30-minute zazen periods with a 5-minute interval in between.

This zen center is ALL you need: peace, calm, the most exquisite nature, mountains, amazing sunsets and sunrises, AMAZING food (they go out of um their way to accommodate your food sensitivities), and of course: zazen. Just the right amount of time, just in the right way, morning wake up with bells and Han (wood knocking). And an amazing zen Tempel so clean and so Japanese looking. Just do yourself and go! Minimum 1 week id say. I'll FOR SURE be back thanks again for everything!

CMZC is a source of much needed refuge for me these days. I am a live-in caregiver for my 97 year old father and I cherish the few days I am able to get away and immerse myself in the silence of Zen for a moment. The place is breathtakingly beautiful, nestled among the rocks and pines, looking out over the valley in one direction and up to the mountain peaks in the other. The residents are very serious Zen practitioners, but at the same time are very warm, accessible and encouraging. The food is so good it makes meditation almost impossible, and the guest house is beautiful and very comfortable. I am always amazed at how I am able to drop into deep meditation almost immediately each time I am there. I attribute that to the special atmosphere created by the teachers and the residents. I am so grateful for the opportunity to practice at CMZC.

My partner and I took a weekend to slow down and enjoy the quiet beauty of the Zen Center. We got exactly what we were looking for. The staff at the zendo were very helpful with suggestions, fed us delicious meals, and gave us space to practice or rest as we saw fit. We will be back--hopefully soon!

The Crestone Mountain Zen Center is a true gem. I went there for the first time for a weekend seminar and am absolutely delighted. The staff and residents were phenomenal. They were so warm and took excellent care of our group. The facility and grounds are beautiful. The food was delicious and plentiful. It was my first experience with zazen meditation, and it was a great experience to meditate with the Zen practitioners in the mornings and evenings. I highly recommend a stay at this special center.

Common questions

The things you're wondering

What is the food like?

Vegetarian, mostly organic and regional, partly grown on the land in summer. Dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice.

Can I arrive by car? Public transport?

The nearest airport is Alamosa (ALS), one hour away. The nearest bus stop is in Moffat, 30 minutes away. We can arrange pickup for a fee. Parking is free and safe at our property.

Do I have to be silent the whole time?

The center operates mostly in functional speech – we speak when needed for work or questions. In general we start our meals in silence, and then move on to a conversation part. Throughout the day, there are also opportunities when you're welcome to chat and talk with others if you'd like.

What kind of clothing is appropriate for the zendo or for meditation?

In the meditation hall (zendo), we wear dark clothing that covers at least the shoulders and knees. In general, we recommend loose-fitting clothing that is not too tight or even constricting.
